About Plays For The Plague Year

On March 13, 2020, as theaters shut their doors and so many of us went into lockdown, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and The Public’s Writer-in-Residence Suzan-Lori Parks picked up her pen and set out to write a play every day. What emerged is a breathtaking chronicle of our collective experience throughout the troubling days and nights that followed.

Performed in the intimate music venue, Joe's Pub, PLAYS FOR THE PLAGUE YEAR is at once a personal story of one family's daily lives, as well as a sweeping account of all we faced as a city, a nation, and a global community. Working in collaboration with Niegel Smith as director, Parks' groundbreaking new work is brimming with humanity, bears witness to what we’ve experienced, and offers inspiration as we look ahead.

Resonant, Intelligent, Entertaining, Clever, Absorbing

See it if Short memory plays written during the first 13 months of the Covid pandemic & social unrest. Alternating between plays & cabaret. Well done.

Don’t see it if Can be triggering depending on what you went thru in 2020. A little long, might edit down by 15 mins but still worth seeing.

Clever, Great singing, Intelligent, Relevant, Thought-provoking

See it if It's a play with songs. Very well done. Great reminder of the shared trauma we all went through during the pandemic lockdown.

Don’t see it if If you don't want to be reminded of the losses and tragedy, stay home. It's worth your time.

Too long, Resonant, Emotional, Original, Ambitious

See it if you want the opportunity to reflect on what 2020 was like. It's stunning to look back and remember what we collectively experienced.

Don’t see it if you aren't ready to relieve the early days of the pandemic. Some seats in Joe's Pub are physically uncomfortable and this is almost 3 hours.

Relevant, Touching, Moving, Resonant, Great writing

See it if You’re open to having a shared experience reliving what it was like to live through the pandemic — with both pain and joy.

Don’t see it if You don’t want to see a barebones production about the pandemic. This is somewhere between a cabaret & a developmental workshop.
