About Mother Play on Broadway

Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel (How I Learned to Drive) has written a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.

It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis (Jessica Lange) is supervising her teenage children, Carl (Jim Parsons) and Martha (Celia Keenan-Bolger), as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path. Bolstered by gin and cigarettes, the family endures — or survives — the changing world around them. Blending flares of imaginative theatricality, surreal farce, and deep tenderness, this beautiful roller coaster ride reveals timeless truths of love, family, and forgiveness.

Interesting, A tiny bit disappointing, Great acting

See it if … for the great talent and star power of the cast…and the roaches. The acting was very strong.

Don’t see it if … during this very early preview performance, not all scenes flowed together successfully. Parts dragged. Needs to be tightened up a bit.

Stir me another with less vermouth.

See it if You want to go with Lange on an odyssey. It is really a showcase for her excellent performance.

Don’t see it if You’re expecting “How I Learned to Drive” caliber drama.

Great staging, Great acting, Absorbing

See it if into a mother with 2 queer kids, and the diff relation with a son or a daughter. A 3-hander, beautifully acted, wonderfully directed.

Don’t see it if well... At times the dynamics seem familiar, but a fresh twist is near. JLange is great!
