In this brand-new adaptation, directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn, Joey Evans is a Black jazz singer in the 1940s struggling to make it big his way, with his sound, on Chicago’s nightclub circuit. Led by Tony-nominated actor Ephraim Sykes (Ain’t Too Proud) as Joey, Elizabeth Stanley (Jagged Little Pill) as Vera, Aisha Jackson (Once Upon a One More Time) as Linda, and Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls) as Lucille, the cast features an ensemble of dance talents including Savion Glover himself. An essential role in the storytelling of this adaptation, Glover’s bold dance stagings capture the authentic rhythm of jazz and the emotional beats of Joey’s story.
This Rodgers and Hart classic features songs like “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” and “I Could Write a Book” and newly incorporates gems like “My Funny Valentine” and “The Lady is a Tramp” that shine with sexy wit, with an updated book by Richard LaGravenese and Daniel “Koa” Beaty.
